The Great & Terrible and the Small & Meek: Dorothy & the Wizard of Oz (2015)
I spent the month of May 2015 working on sets for a theatrical adaptation of the Wizard of Oz written and directed by Donna Oblongata. It was a site-specific piece set on the weird and beautiful banks of the Schuylkill River at Bartram’s Garden in Philadelphia, PA.
As set coordinator, I worked with a crew of volunteer artists and designers to transform our huge outdoor performance space into the Land of Oz. With high ambitions and a low budget, we relied upon an abundance of community spirit, recycled and reclaimed materials, and DIY ingenuity to craft our fantastic environment. I personally took responsibility for designing and building the Wicked Witch’s Castle.
Building the Wicked Witch’s Castle, with the highest tier suspended sixteen feet above the ground, was a challenge I could not have surmounted without my amazing crew: Anne-Marie Gincley, Dana Cohen, Yianni Kourmadas, and Chris Zirbes. Below are some photos of this set in progress.
