The site-specific production was set on the weird and beautiful banks of the Schuylkill River at Bartram’s Garden in Philadelphia, PA. I worked with a crew of volunteer artists and designers to transform our huge outdoor performance space into the Land of Oz. With high ambitions and a low budget, we relied upon an abundance of community spirit, recycled and reclaimed materials, and DIY ingenuity to craft our fantastic environment. Aissatou Ba (2012) In January 2012 I designed an NYU graduate student film titled “The People v. Aissatou Ba,” written and directed by Iquo B. Essien. The film was inspired by the 2011 New York v. Strauss-Kahn case and is presented from the perspective of the title character (played by Jennifer Tchiakpe), a hotel housekeeper and African immigrant who is attempting to move on with her life after she is sexually assaulted at work and the case against her attacker is dismissed. At each show we projected two static slides and one carousel of eighty slides that our viola player, Andrew Keller, advanced using a remote that he pressed with his foot throughout our set. We shot the film in 2010-11 on sets that we constructed in our South Philadelphia rowhome and on location at the 2010 Texas Rose Festival. The film features an original score by Yianni Kourmadas. (2023) I made this cardboard and paper mache pinball machine for “Flip the System,” an Art-Cade and exhibition organized by Morgan FitzPatrick Andrews and Pinbox 3000 at Studio 34 in West Philly. My Pinbox, along with dozens of others, was on view from June 9th - July 9th, 2023. The theme of my Pinbox was "the Cambrian Explosion!" inspired by the prehistoric Cambrian Age, 542 million years ago. At this time on Earth there were no plants or animals on land, but life in the oceans was evolving and diversifying at an incredible rate. This led to a lot of animals with wacky and experimental bodies! Ancestors of all modern animals emerged at that time as well as organisms from lineages that are now extinct. These were the first predators and prey and the first animals to evolve eyes, mouths, legs, and the ability to swim around. It really blew my mind to learn more about early evolution for this project. The Pinbox was fun to build and I was so impressed by the engineering.
