Sally Go ‘Round the Roses is a short, experimental film that I made in collaboration with Phaedra Mae Restad. It explores the symbol of the rose and its eternal human companion, the woman. We were inspired by legends and histories of the rose and its complex associations - romance, divinity, hedonism, purity, mysticism. In a series of vignettes shot on multiple formats (16mm film, super8 film, VHS video, SD digital video) Phaedra portrays a range of characters, including herself, the artist and beholder. We shot the film in 2010-11 on sets that we constructed in our South Philadelphia rowhome and on location at the 2010 Texas Rose Festival. The film features an original score by Yianni Kourmadas.
Sally Go 'Round the Roses was considered unfinished for a decade, its first public screening was on May 22, 2021 at 7PM EDT as part of the program HERE and THERE presented by the Window Room.
