Alpha Girls is the product of the combined talents of many of the coolest indie film folks in Philadelphia. I spent a couple days last summer helping ace production designer Maggie Ruder dress the Alpha house set and paint some custom props and I was so excited to see the film’s trailer when it was released a few weeks ago. It definitely did not disappoint! Killer job, everyone!

I spent the first two weeks of the new year designing an NYU graduate student film titled “The People v. Aissatou Ba,” written and directed by Iquo B. Essien. The film was inspired by the 2011 New York v. Strauss-Kahn case and is presented from the perspective of the title character (played by Jennifer Tchiakpe), a hotel housekeeper and African immigrant who is attempting to move on with her life after she is sexually assaulted at work and the case against her attacker is dismissed.

This month I worked a few days in the art department for an independent feature film called The Red Robin shooting on the Philadelphia Main Line. It was a really fun production with a crackerjack cast and crew, including production designer Dave Barnes and art director Tony Trov. Last weekend I worked for production designer Gino Fortebuono on a commercial for Renewal by Anderson window replacement. It was a short job with a fun challenge— the treatment called for a full cooler of ice to be dumped on a man’s head, so we had to find realistic fake ice that would be soft enough not to hurt the actor and easy to clean up between takes.

I was excited to learn that our shooting location in Doylestown, Pennsylvania was only thirty miles away from the Smooth-On headquarters in Easton, where we picked up a gallon of Encapso® K, a clear silicone rubber that solidifies from two liquid parts in about twenty-four hours. After the rubber cured, we cut it into rough cubes, and the result was everything we had hoped for— convincing ice cubes with a soft, gelatin texture.

I directed, shot, and edited this video for the awesome Philadelphia band Reading Rainbow for their song “Dead End,” which was just released on a split 7” by Hozac Records. It was shot on Pixelvision and VHS at Castle Gay with help from Phaedra Mae Restad and some sweet vintage party lights.

The video was premiered by Stereogum on September 9th, 2011 and has been featured by Magnet Magazine, Impose Magazine, Philadelphia Weekly, The Deli, and more.

I spent the month of July this summer in New York designing a short film called “Paper Words,” written and directed by Randy Yang. The film follows a single mother and young son as they face the potential loss of their home and was set almost entirely in one apartment location in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.

I was given one week to transform a sleek, blank, modern sublet into a realistically cluttered, cozy, colorful family home, which was a huge challenge and also an amazing opportunity to control every detail of the set. The above photo shows the bedroom set for the film’s ten-year-old protagonist, Owen, (played by the ridiculously cute Stefan Olaguera) which was definitely the most fun to decorate. The images below are screenshots from footage by director of photography Michael McSweeney.

This summer has been insanely busy for me, but at the beginning of July I was really happy to have a couple days free to help out with art pre-production for Alpha Girls, a grindhouse horror movie about demonic sorority girls written and directed by Philadelphia comic book creators Tony Trov and Johnny Zito (South Fellini). I helped dress the Alpha house location and designed and painted these sorority paddles, one of which I was psyched to spot in this promo shot for the film! I recently finished a job as production designer on an independent feature film titled Past, Present, Future written and directed by Andrew Gitomer. It was my first full-length film as the head of my department and in addition to all of the sets and props, I was also responsible for wardrobe, which was another first for me that I really enjoyed!

The film’s narrative follows two characters through a tumultuous romantic friendship beginning in high school and progressing in to their mid-twenties. About half of the film was shot in the Philadelphia suburbs and the other half in New York City. The above photo is from one of my favorite sets in the film, a bathroom that has been converted in to a home photo lab. I am really happy with the way everything turned out — more production stills and screen captures coming soon!

spectrum collective's first flight.

It has been a long winter in Philadelphia this year and I was excited to finally welcome the springtime this month with First Flight, a group show of handmade kites and spring themed prints by more than fifty local artists.

First Flight is the premier event for Spectrum Collective, a newly formed artist collective helmed by the lovely and tireless Ariel Baumet. I have been chronicling the collective’s nascence over the last couple months by taking photos at meetings, kite building workshops, artists’ studios, and the installation and opening of the show at Masthead Print Studio in Northern Liberties. My photos will be printed in the upcoming exhibition catalog, but you can also view some of them here!

hermit thrushes march tour.

Hermit Thrushes recently embarked on a tour that will span the entire month of March and take them from Philadelphia to Austin, Texas and back. You can see them play at South by Southwest and if you live south of the Mason-Dixon line there’s a good chance that they’ll be coming to your city!

Before they left, I screen printed a run of fifty tshirts featuring the logo for our record label Single Girl, Married Girl designed by the amazingly talented Emily Royer. The shirts come in a variety of color combinations and can be bought from the band on tour along with the label’s entire catalog, including our most recent release by the ever enigmatic Maxi Ding Dong and the Wee Wees! haunted fridge.

Last Thursday I participated in a group art show called Haunted Fridge, an off-site event curated by Magic Pictures. The exhibition space was a refrigerator in a home on historic Elfreth’s Alley in Old City, Philadelphia.

My piece is a toy theater housed in a milk carton, inspired by miniature novelty theaters of the Victorian era and the refrigerator theme of the show. The players, the girl and the wolf, can be positioned along three different planes on the stage, each setup suggesting a different narrative possibility.
